The "Get Expression" Experience Story

 Presentation on a "Get Expression" experience.

Tell us about the time you "got married", "got in shape", "got angry", "got nervous", "got a present", "got lost", "got a job", "got an important email/text"

This is an anecdote. An anecdote is a short, personal story. Offer us 3 choices and we will vote on 1. 

1. The first time I 'got pulled over' by the police. 

2. The time my friends and I 'got lost' looking for French Fries. 

3. The time I 'got a job'


You should outline your story and speak for 2-3 minutes. Include details in the story. You can use notes. People will be able to ask questions after your tell your story. 

Prepare your story before Monday. If you just talk, you won't use correct grammar. 

Think of your story almost like an essay - there should be an introduction, a body and a conclusion.

You are a director writing a script! Make enough copies for the actors and one for yourself! 3-5 copies. Print it to the front desk - USE THE COMPUTERS ON THE TOEFL SIDE

Dear Abby, 

I don't know what to do! My boyfriend and I have been dating for over two years, but I feel like he doesn't really love me. He rarely asks me out anymore: We don't go to restaurants, or shows. He doesn't buy me even the smallest of presents. I love him, but I think he's taking me for granted. What should I do?

Dear Worried About Love:

I think it's clear from your description that your boyfriend doesn't really love you. Two years is not such a long time to be dating, and the fact that he treats you like a toy he can ignore speaks volumes about his true feelings. Get out of the relationship as fast as you can! There are many more wonderful men out there who will appreciate, and treasure your love - don't waste it on an oaf who clearly has no clue as to your worth!

• The letters have a common structure

1. They begin with a salutation, greeting(Dear Abby, Classmate etc.).
2. The writer provides a brief background to set up his/her problem.
3. The writer briefly describes the dilemma s/he faces.
4. The writer asks a question of the columnist. (What should I do?)
5. The letter is often signed with some sort of anonymous, catchy phrase rather than the person's name. (Worried About Love)

What did you do this weekend?

For Monday, your assignment is to take at least 5 pictures around the city. This means you cannot be at Stafford House or in your apartment/dorm.

If you are with a classmate, you can each talk about your day/adventure but you must present 10 pictures.

Selfies are fine especially if you can see the sites in the background.

Try to think about your language during this presentation and use some of the gerunds and infinitives from pg. 158. You can also use modifiers!

This weekend I was planning to go to The Bean but it was too cold, so I went to the Field Museum. At the Field Museum I wanted to see the exhibit on Ancient Egypt.  I was with my friend, Mari. I really like this place. I definitely recommend it. Especially Sue the dinosaur!

Here is my picture, here is me. Here is my friend. This is food we ate. I enjoy. Finished. 

Famous For

When people think of Chicago they think of Michael Jordan, Deep-dish pizza and Gangsters.

What do people think of when they think of your hometown?

For this presentation you will describe a couple of things your hometown is famous for. These can be buildings, food or scenery.

For this presentation your focus should be on using new vocabulary. There is plenty of vocabulary on pages 156, 157. You can also use important prepositional phrases from page 49.  Try to use 6-10 vocabulary words.


You can show a photo of a famous location, building, site etc...


You should make a small PowerPoint with 3-5 images of things your hometown is famous for.
